Rock and roll is music for cutting loose. Although many of rock's greatest recordings are as intricate as a classical concerto, its live performance should always risk precision for emotional intensity. A singer tells a story of attraction, heartbreak, or escape from life's everyday restrictions. Singing on pitch and remembering the lyrics are therefore not enough to convince his audience of the story's authenticity. He must become an actor who surprises and affects us. I tell familiar stories with passion and humor. You know the songs; I only make them rock and roll. |
