Acclaimed Music
A professional statistician has compiled all critics' best-of lists--from Rolling Stone to
obscure Dutch rock mags--to develop this overall consensus of the best rock songs
and albums of all time. This amazing list can be viewed by decade, year or "All Time".
He regularly updates the list and keeps an active forum for music nuts like me. I can
spend hours perusing this website.
Reason to Rock: Rock Music as Art Form
Excellent paper on the cultural function of rock. Clarifies some of the posits made in
Greil Marcus'
Mystery Train.
Best songs of all times
Self-appointed rock critic/historian. Writes in Italian, but much of the site has been
translated. Makes the point that much music that Americans commonly consider
standards are virtually unknown in Europe and vice versa. His lists of best songs
and albums of all time include some delightfully obscure choices, many of which I
am still discovering.
allmusic
Comprehensive music encyclopedia. All but the truly obscure can be found here,
with great trivia and fine criticism.
Alan W. Pollack's Notes on ... Series
Alan W. Pollack, a music theorist, has recognized the Beatles' harmonic
vocabulary and written a complete harmonic and structural analysis of every song
in their catalog. Essential reading for any musician or student of harmony.
indie 103.1 fm
Southern California's best rock station! Don't settle for tired "Classic Rock" with its
suffocatingly short playlists, nor KROQ with its macho posturing. Try something
fun and fresh. Everything rock and roll should be.
In The Attic: The Official Greil Marcus Home Page
Possibly the most innovative rock critic alive, Marcus set a new standard in the
field with his 1975 masterpiece
Mystery Train - Images of America in Rock'n'Roll
Music
, How does rock communicate the American myth to its audience? Any
modern discussion of rock artists necessarily refers to the discoveries made here.
